Generational Swell: Hurricane Erin in Rhode Island

editorial
Early August of ’25 an easterly wave of low pressure pushes off the African coast into the Atlantic Basin. Over the next 48 hours, NOAA satellites watch that atmospheric disturbance form into Tropical Storm Erin; making her the first name-worthy system of the year. Erin gained speed just northeast of the Caribbean with winds jumping from 145 mph to 160 mph, officially gaining the designation of hurricane on the 15th. Ratcheting up in intensity from category 4 to category 5 within a 24 hour window, surfers across the Eastern Seaboard patiently looked through that window, knowing that after a relatively quiet start to the season it was about to get noisy.

A Long Time Coming: The 2026 Phase 5 Viper by Samuel Goncalves

editorial
The Viper is a hard-charging, aggressive surf-style board, with a moon-shaped nose, twin-fin configuration, sharp rails and a bunch of concave. Designed by Sammy G alongside fellow world champ and Phase 5 teammate John Ackerman; these two worked to dial in a shape that fit Sammy's aggressive approach to riding. The moon-nose helps stabilize the board when riding revert while the exaggerated bottom concave paired with the sharp rails allows for exceptional speed when turning on rail. The fin boxes are higher up on the board which makes slashes and 360's feel like butter. It's stable where you need it to be, and breaks free when you want it to. In our opinion, the quality and feel of a Phase 5 board is unmatched and we couldn't be more stoked to have that paired with the design and preference of Sammy G.

An Interview with JG Shredeye by Nate Zoller

editorial
JG has spent the last few decades (literally) shaping snowboarding. When he’s not doing that, he’s surfing whenever and wherever he can. A few years back he had the idea to bring those two worlds even closer together - a snowsurf made with the same high-end materials that are utilized in today’s high-performance surfboards. Designed in Vermont and crafted in Ventura, CA, his Shredeye boards are as much surfboards as they are binding-less snowboards–the water beneath them is just a bit colder than your typical east coast break. With that in mind, we figured it was best for him to sit down with another seasoned surfer to answer a few basic questions. Neon Wave Team Rider Nate Zoller sits down with JG to take a deep dive into his slabs of foam and what makes them some of the funnest planks on the hill.

Signs Of Wear w/ Mario

editorial
The idea of extending the life and application of our clothing has become more and more prevalent. Much to the credit of the makers, sewers, crafters, and textile workers who have carried on their traditions and foraged fresh ones of their own. Mario’s work, in tandem with the initial makers/designers, stands in opposition to the familiar push for more and more; purchase, wear, discard, repeat.

A Guide to Technical Layering: Cold Weather Systems

editorial
You have surely heard the term and practiced the act in the context of textiles. Something as simple as throwing a jacket over a tee or adding tights under your snowpants are good examples of how integral layering is in our day to day dress. Past that, why is it important and what is the point to building a solid layering system? Think of your layers as a micro-shelter. Your own personal eco-system that impacts how you experience temperature, moisture levels, and physical output in any given environment. At its core, an effective and appropriate layering system will help regulate temperature, keep you dry, provide full range of motion, and protect you from the elements; keeping you warm and comfortable. A good system means more fun and safety outdoors and more time connecting with what you love.
